The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2

First Book of Samuel

Chapter 2

¹ Hannah prayed and said, "My heart exults in the LORD; my strength is exalted in my God." My mouth decides my enemies, because I rejoice in my victory.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 1)

Oh God, my Father let us all give praise and worship to You for You have made us victors over all our enemies among which the greatest is Satan and his fallen evil spirits that are sent to make us sin against You my God and Father. Let us all join in the praying of the Magnificat Amen by clicking on the following link.

² " There is no Holy One like the LORD, no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 2)

Oh God, indeed there is nobody like You, for You are clean and just and not corrupt as in the humans of this world. You are the only one in whom I can really and truly trust Amen.

³ Talk no more so very proudly, let not arrogance come from your mouth; for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by him actions are weighed.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 3)

Oh God, my beloved Father, the more we disclose of our self, the more our real self is made aware both in our relationships with others and even with our own self. After a few minutes of talking with someone, that person may portray a mental image or projection of who we are our character, our strengths and weaknesses and may even behave in relation to us according to this perception which may be true but on the other hand may also be deceptive. I pray that You filter my lips and brain from all forms of deception Amen.

⁴ The bows of the mighty are broken, but the feeble gird on strength. ⁵ Those who were full have hired themselves out for bread, but those who were hungry are fat with spoil. The barren has borne seven, but she who has many children is forlorn.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verses 4 to 5)

Oh God, my Father I greatly thank You for Your justice. You who compensates us for our weaknesses, in Your good time. Praise be Your name, You who are able to reverse our false beliefs, the course of nature, the 'can not be, or can not do attitude' and change it to a positive one, thus giving us strength faith and motivation to move on Amen.

⁶ The LORD kills and brings to life; he brings down to Sheol and raises up. ⁷ The LORD makes poor and makes rich: he brings low, he also exalts.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verses 6 to 7)

Oh God my Father, You have control over all that takes place in my life, You permit people to advance to a promotion and You, permit others to be demoted or expelled. Everything happens according to Your will Amen. Praise be to the LORD my God and Father Amen.

⁸ He raises up the poor from the dust; he lifts the needy from the ash heap, to make them sit with princes and inherit a seat of honour. For the pillars of the earth are the LORD's and on them he has set the world.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 8)

Oh God my beloved Father you are so powerful and in control of what happens in our life, that You can easily change our situations from one of poverty to one that is entirely the opposite. You are able to raise the humble and make of the signs for those who think they are high and mighty. As in the following cases, You are able to improve our life situations and give us a better future Amen.

⁹ "He will guard the feet of his faithful ones, but the wicked shall be cut off in darkness;  for not by might does one prevail.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 9)

Oh God my beloved Father, You know that the theory "Might is right" is not that right after all, however, at times like the present, I am having to put up a charade of a person whom I do not wish to be. I am in a situation at home, where if I am lenient and tolerant I continue to be hurt, however in order to protect and preserve myself  I have had to become tough and authoritative, for I cannot stand my wife and her behaviour anymore. I have become like an angry and hurt animal who shows his fangs on being threatened and raises his hackles in preparation to defend oneself against one's enemy. I pray that You help me find my good and gentle self or a healthy balance Amen.

¹⁰ The LORD! His adversaries shall be shattered; the Most High will thunder in heaven.  The LORD will judge the ends of the earth; he will give strength to his king, and exalt the power of his anointed."

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 10)

Oh God my Father, in You I find my self and my identity, however when I am not on Your side, Indeed You will be my adversary, and who can stand against You my God and Father. I pray that You help me in this moment of stress and chaos, for I am not feeling well Amen.

¹¹ Then Elkanah went home to Ramah, while the boy remained to minister to the LORD, in the presence of the priest Eli.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 11)

Oh God, my beloved Father, there was a time when I also spent time away from home, in order to dedicate my life to You, however for some reason You did not want me to lead this form of life. This was not the life or purpose that You had called me for. Even though You told me to leave everything I had had, in order to follow You, I did not obey. I married and accumulated more than ever, and have become entangled in the affairs of this world. I pray oh God that You get me out of this mess and give me the opportunity to start fresh Amen.

¹² Now the sons of Eli were scoundrels; they had no regard for the LORD ¹³ or for the duties of the priests to the people. When anyone offered sacrifice, the  priest's servant would come, while the meat was boiling, with a three pronged fork in his hand, ¹⁴ and he would thrust it into the pan, or kettle, or caldron, or pot; all that the fork brought up the priest would take for himself. This is what they did at Shiloh to all the Israelites who came there.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verses 12 to 14)

Oh God, my Father many times we do the same thing in different ways and circumstances. We decide to take the merit or benefit for a situation in which You and Your providence were the primary actor instead of giving thanks to You and this is a great pity for You are the sole benefactor Amen.

¹⁵  Moreover before the fat was burned, the priest's servant  would come and say to the one who was sacrificing, "Give meat for the priest to roast; for he will not accept boiled meat from you, but only raw." ¹⁶ And if the man said to him, "Let them burn the fat first, and then take whatever you wish," he would say, "No, you must give it now; if not, I will take it by force." ¹⁷ Thus the sin of the young men was very great in the sight of the LORD; for they treated the offerings of the LORD with contempt.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verses 15 to 17)

Oh God, my Father these were the sins of the church of our forefathers however Your church of which I am a member baptized are still sinners. I pray that You have mercy on Your Church and cleanse it of such members who make a bad reputation on all the other members especially priests and other members of the clergy Amen.

¹⁸ Samuel was ministering before the LORD, a boy wearing a linen ephod. ¹⁹ His mother used to make for him a little robe and take it to him each year, when she went with her husband to offer the yearly sacrifice.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verses 18 to 19)

Oh God my Father as parents we are to prepare our sons and daughters for being mini soldiers of Christ, especially by sending them regularly for catechism and communion and by giving them practical examples from daily life, in how to nourish their relationship with You my God and Father. Every day we are to give our sons and daughters new tunics new updates on the faith so that like a computer programme they would remain updated Amen.

²⁰ Then Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, and say, "May the LORD repay you with children by this woman for the gift that she made to the LORD; and then they would return to their home.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 20)

Oh God my beloved Father, You are generosity itself, You have mercy on us, even if we do not donate to You, for what have we that is ours if not our sins, apart from these, everything is Yours and the product of Your divine providence and love for us.

²¹ And the LORD took note of Hannah: she conceived and bore three sons and two daughters. And the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the LORD.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 21)

Oh God, my beloved Father You make possible that which appears to be impossible or difficult to accomplish as in the case of Hannah. You answer our prayers in abundance in Your good and God time Amen. Help us to place our trust in You my God and Father Amen.

²² Now Eli was very old. He heard all that his sons were doing to all Israel, and how they lay with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 22)

Oh God, my blessed Father, when we become of happenings that are taking place around us, at a certain mature age, such events whether positive or even negative become of a greater concern to us, especially if they concern members of our inner circles such as family members. As humans, we all wish a better future for our sons and daughters and that breeds concern in us. As our Father You also have concern for us, therefore we are also to seek a stronger relationship with You Amen.

²³ He said to them, "Why do you do such things? For I hear of your evil dealings from all these people.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 23)

As in the case of the sons of Eli we can also ask ourselves the same question:

"Why do we do the things we do? What is our motive, and what do we aim to gain?

Oh Brothers and Sisters including myself, God is aware of all our actions even though we may take this for granted and say that God loves us and will brush all our negative actions aside. We are to stop and reflect on the consequences of our actions both on earth and more when we meet our heavenly Father on leaving this world. Amen

²⁴ No, my sons; it is not a good report that I hear the people of the LORD spreading abroad.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 24)

Oh God, my Father when I commit a sin it does not only affect me but also others in my inner and outer circles. As a Roman Catholic, this may have a negative effect on others whose faith may also be affected, especially if they held high expectations of me or maybe consider me for instance as being as a role model. The greater our role, the more our responsibility. Amen

²⁵ If one person sins against another, someone can intercede for the sinner with the LORD; but if someone sins against the LORD, who can make intercession?" But they would not listen to the voice of their father; for it was the will of the LORD to kill them.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 25)

Oh God my Father, I thank You for the power of intercession, that we can intercede for each other before You, but as You said when we sin directly against You it is Your righteousness and mercy that has the final decision, however as Abraham interceded on behalf of others and pleaded for mercy even if there were only three righteous people, I know that You will consider my prayers of intercession Amen.

²⁶ Now the boy Samuel continued to grow both in stature and in favor with the LORD and with the people.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 26)

Oh God, my Father, right now I feel that I am not that popular with people. Some at work do not like working with me and they make it obvious to me. I go out of my way in order to help my clients even if this means stretching the available resources at the time of the request. I pray that I will always find favour with You my God and Father Amen.

²⁷ A man of God came to Eli and said to him, "Thus the LORD has said, 'I revealed myself to the family of your ancestor in Egypt when they were slaves to the house of Pharoah.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 27)

Oh God my blessed Father, You send us many people with messages to enlighten us, however I pray that You enlighten our minds to be able to discern which of such people and their messages are sent to deliver us and which are there to hinder us in our pathway to Heaven Amen.

²⁸ I chose him out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to offer incense, to wear an ephod before me; and I gave to the family of your ancestor all my offerings by fire from the people of Israel.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 28)

Oh God my Sacred Father, I pray that we learn to show more love care and respect to Your chosen ones even though like us they have their strong points and their weak points Amen.

²⁹ Why then look with greedy eye at my sacrifices and my offerings that I commanded, and honour your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choicest parts of every offeing of my people Israel?"

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 29)

Oh God, my Father, when I offer my prayers to You, I do not become fat with Your providence but I share of what You provide with others Amen. I pray that You provide me with more so that I have more to share with others Amen.

³⁰ Therefore the LORD the God of Israel declares: 'I promised that your family and the family of your ancestor should go in and out before me forever'; but now the LORD declares; 'Far be it from me; for those who honor me I will honor, and those who despise me shall be treated with contempt.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 30)

Oh God, my Father may it be as declared in Your promise that those who honour and worship You will be given Your honour, I pray that we be all found worthy of being found worthy of Your honour Amen.

³¹ See, a time is coming when I will cut off your strength and the strength of your ancestor's family, so that no one in your family will live to old age.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 31)

Oh God my beloved Father, who would have thought that when a family comes to an end thus leaving no descendants it is still according to Your will. I pray that we never end up cut off from You for You are my lifeline, the reason for my existence Amen.

³² Then in distress you will look with greedy eye on all the prosperity that shall be bestowed upon Israel; and no one in your family shall ever live to old age.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 32)

Oh God what a  sorrowful time it would be for us to see friends and relatives entering the doors of heaven but on the other hand we would be denied this opportunity. Therefore we are all to repent from our sinful ways and live according to the will of God my Father, for none of us knows the date or the hour Amen.

³³ The only one of you whom I shall not cut off from my altar shall be spared to weep out his eyes and grieve his heart; all the members of your household shall die by the sword.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 33)

Oh God, my beloved Father it would indeed be distressful if I had to be cut off from your altar and be denied receiving You.  I would do anything to return back to my place in the kingdom Amen.

³⁴ The fate of your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, shall be the sign to you-both of them shall die on the same day.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 34)

Oh God, my Father, many people may consider the death of particular people as being coincidental and of no particular value, however, on the other hand, every person is of value to You. Moreover, there may be times when You may be trying to pass on a message to us by means of the death of a particular person and we might be too alienated to interpret the message.

³⁵ I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who shall do according to what is in my heart and in my mind. I will build him a sure house, and he shall go in and out before me anointed one forever.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 35)

Oh, brothers and sisters, God is all the time working in our interest, whether we are aware or not. He is in the process of creating significant people who are to be tools in his hands for the good of humanity. You and I may be such tools. Therefore we are to always be open to the will of God and never resist Him Amen.

³⁶ Everyone who is left in your family shall come to implore him for a piece of silver or a loaf of bread, and shall say, Please put me in one of the priest's places, that I may eat a morsel of bread.

(The First Book of Samuel Chapter 2 verse 36)

Oh God my Father when You choose persons to be Your ministers You give them a vocation and role in society that is very precious and important, one that is becoming rare because vocations are on the decrease. Therefore I pray for many more vocations so that Your Church will continue to be vibrant with the energy of the Holy Spirit and like You a loving servant to all of its sons and daughters Amen.

Oh God, my Father, I would like to end this meditation on the second chapter of the first book of Samuel with the following prayer.

God my Father we are in need of more priests and people such as ministers who give You praise and worship and testimony of Your works in their life. I wish that our testimony becomes stronger. Society has become alienated and materialistic. I pray that You wake us up from our alienation. We need living testimonies such as Pope St. Francis and many others who work and pray in silence for the good of the world. Thank You Jesus. God bless all and I wish all a genuine Christmas and New Year.
